What counts as an anagram
An anagram rearranges every letter of the original exactly once — nothing added, nothing left over. LISTEN becomes SILENT, ENLIST and TINSEL. The tool sorts the letters of your word and finds every dictionary word with the same sorted letters, which is why it's instant.
Why it also shows words one letter shorter
Plenty of letter sets have no perfect anagram at all. The second group shows words that use all but one of your letters — often the answer when a puzzle has one letter that doesn't belong, or when you've mistyped.
Crosswords and cryptic clues
Anagram clues are a staple of cryptic crosswords, flagged by words like "mixed", "broken" or "confused". Enter the letters the clue gives you here. For puzzles where you know some letters' positions, use the word finder instead.
